Nash explores the concept of a Nash equilibrium in terms of pitch content and process. The violins have the same pitch material in each movement, arranged according to playing different strategies in the equilibrium. Nash was written in honor of what would have been John Nash's 90th birthday.
In game theory, a game is defined as an interaction between multiple players where each player has a set of decisions they can make, and each player gets some payout based on everyone's choices. A Nash equilibrium is a strategy for each player that tells them which decision to make where, if all players play their strategy, no individual player can get a bigger payout by being the only one to change their strategy.
Nash was premiered in October 2018 at NEC’s Tuesday Night New Music series by Tiffany Chang and Alison Kim.
