songs of summer

songs of summer (yes, there are no capitals in the title) is my attempt at coping with the “loss” of a close friend (she's fine, keep reading). I had been interested in setting the work of the poet, a mutual friend of ours, for a while, when we had started getting close to each other. But less than two months later, I moved to Boston, leaving her behind in New Jersey. Reading over Sean's April poetry from that year, I was struck by the simple evocative language he used that summed up my feelings at the situation. I wrote this cycle over the course of several months, and offered it to her as a gift.

songs of summer is a cycle about yearning—yearning for a time gone by, yearning for a lost love, yearning for things you once had and experiences you once shared that now, just due to the passage of time and life, you no longer have. Each song brings a different take to the unique desperation for something just out of reach, from the flowing triplets in the first to the clear open fourths in the second to the gently pulsating dissonances in the third.
songs of summer is dedicated to Austen, one of my closest friends, and someone I miss very much.

songs of summer will be premiered at a later date.
